Cassette Tapes Were Serious Business

The following is a small excerpt from an unpublished memoir that I am currently writing. All text ©2016 Jim Younkin. Keep an eye out for the book sometime in the future.

Do you know what a pencil and a cassette tape have in common? Do you know what a cassette tape even is? Your answers the preceding questions will largely depend on when you were born.

I was born in 1977. The following is a reminder of the struggle all of us who grew up in the 80s had to go through to have our music.

I remember first starting my relationship with music when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I had a small radio cassette tape player and I remember listening to the radio at night and recording songs off the radio onto cassette tapes.

Apple Music Not Showing Up In iTunes - How To Fix

If you can't find the Apple Music options (missing "For You" and "New" in the top menu) in iTunes after updating to iTunes 12 here's how to turn it on on Windows. (Mac should be similar.)

  • If you don't see a menu bar (with "File Edit…" Etc.) hold Control and press "B" to show the menu bar. ("Show Menu Bar" is also available from the small half black/half white icon in the very top left of the window.)
  • In the menu bar click "Edit" then click "Preferences"
  • In the "General" tab of the preferences click the check box labeled "Show Apple Music".
  • Click "Okay" to save the changes.
  • You should now see the "For You" and "New" Apple Music options in the top bar.
  • Enjoy Apple Music
Why was it turned off? I chose to answer "Not Now" to the "Use iCloud Music Library" thing it asked about and I think that may have been why it was turned off.

The Facebook Dilemma - Ads, Data Usage & the NSA vs. My Friends & Family

I posted the following on my Facebook account on August 30, 2013. I won't say much upfront baca use the post says it all. With the latest potential upcoming data usage changes from Facebook I may have finally hit my Facebook tipping point where the negatives (as I see them) might outweigh the positives.

Originally posted on my Facebook:

"Since the new year I've been using Facebook less and less. Since the Edward Snowden/NSA revelations I've been cutting down how much of my information goes up on any online service.

With the upcoming Facebook data use policy changes and all the ads they've added over the last few years I don't think the positives of Facebook outweigh the negatives anymore.

As has been widely noted online: "if you're not paying for something, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold".
